1927
Built by Donald Ross, built for the public.
Asheville Municipal Golf Course opened in 1927 as an eighteen-hole Donald Ross design, the first public municipal course in the Carolinas.
Ross, a Hall of Fame architect, laid it out for working people at a time when the game was largely private, and it has been Western North Carolina's public course ever since, the place where the region learns to play.
1954
A course that opened its doors early.
In 1954, the Muni became one of the first municipal courses in the Southeast to integrate, years ahead of much of the country.
That is not a footnote here. It is central to what the Muni is, and it runs straight into the story of the SkyView Open, one of the most important chapters in Black golf in the South.
Today
Still the region's public course.
Almost a hundred years on, the Muni still does what it was built to do.
More than 40,000 rounds are played here each year, by first-timers and lifelong golfers, school teams and retirees, on a historic Ross layout that never asked for a country-club price.
That is rare, and it is the reason FOAM exists.
