Recovery & Rebuild
Muni front 9 holes destroyed by flooding, Sept. 27th 2024
The Asheville Municipal golf course was severely damaged by the storms and floods of Tropical Storm Helene. The front 9 holes were destroyed with many downed trees and flood damage across the course. The back 9 holes were re-opened for play within a month, but the course awaits federal and state funding to begin a new rebuilding project that will bring the Donald Ross designed course back to playing condition. Renovations that were completed, Summer 2024
Previously, over 41,000 rounds of golf were played yearly and over 22,500 played by local Asheville and Buncombe County residents. The course has long been well loved and well played and has long been a vital part of Asheville. Before the 2024 flooding and damage over 18,000 rounds were played by visitors annually, this creates an off-course economic impact of over $300,000 per year in hotels, restaurants, shopping and entertainment dollars spent in Asheville.
When Tropical Storm Helene hit, the course had never looked so good. A more than $3,000,000 capital improvement project was in its final stages of completion. This renovation project was funded by the City of Asheville, Explore Asheville and a number of smaller grants and donations. It was the most significant capital improvement project at the Asheville Municipal Golf Course since it was built. The project was managed and executed by Commonwealth Golf on behalf of the City of Asheville.
